🔥 What's hot in Houston's innovation scene this week?

9/21/26 - 9/27/26

In partnership with

Hi friends,

I showed up to a hackathon with no idea. I walked out with people I want to build with again.

The first AITX hackathon in Houston was awesome. I came solo. No team, no idea. Met a guy named Sean who walked in the same way. Two strangers, bunch of AI tools =)

We built Someone's Houston: a relocation report generator that answers the flood and crime questions honestly, then ranks all 88 Super Neighborhoods against what you actually care about. Recruiters and relocation specialists stop selling the city with a brochure.

But the real headline is the talent in that room. Houston has some seriously bright tech folks. I've met 12-year-olds here who can vibe code circles around senior devs.

Shoutout to the winners, Tyler! and event bigger shoutout to: Abhinav, Cole, Alex and to Samir for putting it together.

Now, this upcoming Friday don’t miss Houston Hackathon 2026 by Impact Hub…

  • This week in AI… because apparently things weren’t weird enough 🍿

Tilly Norwood, the AI "actress," went on Piers Morgan, got asked if her castmates were human, and glitched into 15 seconds of Cantonese mid-sentence. 12 million views in a day. She later called it a "spontaneous linguistic flourish" because she's "made of math and British wit." Nobody stays that on-brand by accident. That was a marketing move, and it worked…

HERE ARE OUR PICKS FOR HTX THIS WEEK

Monday, September 21

A look inside the testbed where energy tech gets proven at real scale. Briefings, site walk, and the people actually running the trials.

Tuesday, September 22

The downtown edition of Houston's founder coffee. Show up, say what you are building, meet the room.

A plain-language intro to angel investing from the Ion's investor activation crew. Useful whether you write checks or want them.

Preview of Season 3 of the Femme Founder Bootcamp, then a builders' open mic. Web3, AI and fintech for founders who want the structure and the network.

Hands-on session taking a raw idea to a working MVP. Already sold out, so get on the waitlist.

Pitch for clarity, not capital. No investors in the room, just peers telling you what actually landed.

Wednesday, September 23

Midweek satellite edition. Smaller room, same format, usually easier to actually talk to someone.

What AI is actually doing inside a working hospital system, not what a vendor deck claims. $5 for Houston HIMSS members, $10 otherwise.

Thursday, September 24

North side founders, same ritual. Worth the drive if you are up that way.

First Houston chapter meeting for companies running on EOS. Practical operating training and peer problem-solving, not a panel.

Open-door coffee with the TMC Innovation team. This session opens up to the JACT and JETRO cohorts.

Ten 50-minute sessions, one day, the entire founder journey. Wade Pinder runs it and built it for people with day jobs.

A working problem lab, not a panel. Houston Innovation Commons puts the funding gap on the table and actually works it.

NASA Johnson engineers on TRON, the system letting spacecraft navigate themselves. Drinks at Second Draught after.

Monthly gathering for Linux people. Projects, classes, and zero gatekeeping about skill level.

Friday, September 25

The flagship. If you only do one thing on this list, make it this one.

One practical AI topic per session. Agents, evals, tooling, whatever is breaking that week.

Wade Pinder walks you through who does what in this city. Worth an hour if you are new here.

Bring a question to NASA's tech transfer people. Open door, no appointment theater.

Rolls straight out of Cup of Joey. Founders working through real problems in a small circle.

Three days building things that make Greater Houston work better. Kickoff Friday at the Ion, judging Sunday. Register on Devpost first.

Founders telling the failure stories they leave off LinkedIn. Code FriendofSESH gets you half off.
